After putting all that time and effort into getting ready in the morning, the last thing you want to do is put on your hat to go out into the cold. I completely agree. There are a few things you can do to make to help make putting on that warm winter hat a little easier and survive winter hat season.
I’ve recently heard of a way to use the winter hat to your advantage. The Aveda stylist team recommends that you use the heat created under your hat to help you style your hair (brilliant!). Using a styling wax or flexible hold gel, twist your hair into ringlets, pin the curls to your head with bobby pins and then put your hat on. When you get to work, you will have dry, curly hair. It’s worth a try!
But if you choose to style your hair and then put your hat on, here are a few tips to keep your locks safe from hat head.
How about that static, huh? There is nothing worse than pulling off your cute winter sock hat and seeing and hearing the results of static electricity. Apply a smoothing hair balm like It’s a 10 Silk Express Smoothing Balm after washing your hair to prevent the static frizz.
Instead of using a heavy or firm spray on top of your head to hold your style in place, try using a root lifter like Big Sexy Hair Root Pump Plus on the base. The heavy spray is going to cause your hair to collapse under your hat while the root lifter can help you avoid the flat hat head look once the hat comes off.
Never put on a hat right after you blow dry your hair. Heat helps to shape hair and cooling off is what locks the style into place. Putting on a hat while your hair is still warm from blow drying could rid your locks of all volume and shape in seconds.
If you have long hair, go ahead and curl it. You can put it up in a loose bun before putting on the hat. When you take off the hat, lightly shake out the bun and reapply product where necessary.
Still nervous about wearing a winter hat? Ear muffs are a safe alternative. They aren’t going to keep the heat in like a hat would but they will keep your ears warm.
Remember during the winter months, it’s also important to keep your locks safe from the elements. Here’s a few tips on keeping your hair healthy during the winter.
I’m curious though, how do you keep warm and keep your style? Me? I love a loose sock hat so my volume isn’t wasted or I wear my hair in a french braid or pull it up in a bun.
